Application Guide to the Early Entrant Program
Early Entrants are defined as students who are 18 years or younger who have not completed high school, and are not being homeschooled.
  • Early Entrants do not have a high-school diploma.
  • The GED may not be substituted for a high school diploma by Early Entrants.
  • While Early Entrants may have completed some college work, if it exceeds 59 semester hours at a college, university or community college, please contact the Admission Office.

    Admission Criteria:
    In reviewing applications for Early Entrance, the Admission Committee emphasizes high grade-point average (GPA), class rank, and high scores on achievement tests such as SAT, SAT II, and ACT. Evidence of Advanced Placement, participation in the International Baccalaureate, and/or college level course work while in high school will strengthen the student’s application.

    To be considered for Early Entrance to Shimer College, applicants must be in the top quartile of at least one of the following:
  • High School class rank OR
  • Grade-point average (GPA) OR
  • ACT or SAT examinations

    COMPLETE YOUR APPLICATION WITH THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION
    1. Application fee of $25 by check or money order made payable to Shimer College
    2. Official high school transcripts
    3. Official results of an ACT or SAT examination
    4. Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a teacher who can assess your academic progress and level of readiness for college-level work
    5. An interview which may be conducted on the Shimer campus or by phone
    6. Official transcripts from each college attended (if any)
    7. Two carefully written essays that answer the following questions:
        a. What book have you read recently that you found especially significant or valuable? What difference has it made in your life?
        b. Describe an educational experience which you found to be rewarding or frustrating.
    As an alternative to the questions listed above, you may elect to submit a portfolio of two or three examples of expository writing of high quality.
